Nepal National Cricket team officially started their ICC 2023 Cricket World Cup qualification process from the recently concluded home tri-series. The tri-series played under 2019–22 ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 is the pathway to the ICC 2023 Cricket World Cup in India. Want to know how Nepal can Qualify for 2023 Cricket World Cup in India ? There will be two or three phases of selection based on the ranking in the league. Nepal will play a set of 9 tri-series from 2019 to 2022. There are currently 7 teams in 2019–22 ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 and every team will play each other six times which makes a total of 36 ODI matches for each nation. The top three teams from this league will get direct qualification to ICC World Cup Qualifiers. So, to get direct qualification for the World Cup qualifiers, Nepal must finish in top 3 among the 7-teams table.

Nepal has played only a tri-series (4 matches) in which Nepal won two against USA and lost two against Oman. After the two wins, Nepal has total 4 points from four matches. Oman is currently leading the 7-teams standing.

What if Nepal finishes below top 3 in ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 ?

There will be still another chance for the bottom placed teams. With top 3 getting direct qualification to the World Cup Qualifiers, the bottom four teams will play play-off against the top two teams advancing from ICC Cricket World Cup Challenge League. Top two from this play-off will now advance to the ICC World Cup Qualifiers.

Which teams will be there in ICC World Cup Qualifiers ?

There will be total of 10 teams in the ICC World Cup Qualifiers. Top three teams from ICC Cricket World Cup League 2, top two from play-offs. The remaining five teams will be the bottom five teams from the 2020–22 ICC Cricket World Cup Super League. 

What is ICC Cricket World Cup Super League ?

The ICC Cricket World Cup Super League is played by 13 teams among which 12 of them are Full members of the International Cricket Council (ICC). The thirteenth team is the Netherlands  won the 2015–17 ICC World Cricket League Championship to qualify for this competition. Among the 13 teams, the top 7 gets direct qualification to the  2023 Cricket World Cup. India, as a host is already qualified for the World Cup. Therefore, in case if India finishes inside top 7 in the Super League, the team ranking 8th will get qualified. The bottom five teams will go to the ICC Cricket World Cup Challenge League and join the other 5 teams.

The thirteen teams in the Super League are: Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, Ireland, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, West Indies and Zimbabwe.

Among the ten teams, only top two teams will qualify for the ICC World Cup 2023 in India. Therefore, top 7 teams from Super League, top two teams from ICC World Cup Qualifiers along with the host India makes it 10 teams in the ICC World Cup 2023.

So, how Nepal can Qualify for 2023 Cricket World Cup ?

The pathway to the ICC World Cup 2023 is very very tough for Nepal. However, it is not impossible. Nepal’s first priority will be the 2019–22 ICC Cricket World Cup League 2. Nepal must finish inside top 3 and get direct qualification to the World Cup Qualifiers.
