Nepali Cricket has already appeared in the ICC T20 World Cup in Bangladesh back in 2014 where Nepal impressed with two wins out of three group matches. However, the is the first and last time till now that Nepal has played a T20 World Cup.
Nepali cricket is yet to qualify for the ICC ODI Cricket World Cup. ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 is the pathway to the ICC 2023 Cricket World Cup in India. ICC came up with the new pathway to the world cup from this edition.
How can Nepal Qualify for Cricket World Cup 2023 ?
A total of 10 nations will be competing in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in India. Among the 10 nations, eight of them will directly qualify from the ICC CWC Super League. The teams finishing inside top 8 from the super league will directly qualify for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.
The remaining two spots will be decided from the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifiers, from where the Associates teams like Nepal have chance to qualify for the World Cup. The interesting thing is, at least four full member nation will have to play this qualifiers, so the the associate nations can get much needed exposure.
ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifiers will have 10 teams and top two from that 10 will play the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. Among that 10 teams, 5 of them will be the bottom 5 nations from the CWC Super League, 3 teams will be the top 3 from ICC CWC League 2 and the remaining two will be the top two teams from CWC Qualifiers Play-off.
– What is Cricket World Cup Super League ?
ICC Cricket World Cup Super League is a league comprising all the Test Nations (Full Member) and the winner of ICC Cricket World Cup League Championship (2015-2017). Nepal has finished 7th in that league and was relegated to Division 2.
A total of 13 teams are in the CWC Super League and among those 13, the top eight will directly qualify for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. The bottom 5 teams will relegate to ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifiers.
Nepal will get chance to play against at least two of these big Test Nations: Sri Lanka, South Africa and West Indies (If Nepal qualify for the Cricket World Cup Qualifiers.)
England, New Zealand, India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Australia and Afghanistan are sure to finish the top eight, so they have qualified for the ICC Cricket World Cup. One of the team from West Indies, South Africa, Sri Lanka and Ireland will join them. Which means, among West Indies, South Africa and Sri Lanka; at least two of them will have to play the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifiers and Nepal will have a golden chance to play with those big Test Nations in the Qualifiers, if Nepal manage to qualify for the Qualifiers.
– What is ICC Cricket World Cup League Two ?
ICC Cricket World Cup League Two consists of the remaining nations with the ODI Status. Apart from the 13 teams in the Super League, seven other nations have the ODI Status and CWC League 2 comprises of those seven nations.
The top three from the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 will qualify for the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifiers and will join the bottom five teams from the Super League.
Scotland and Oman have qualified for the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifiers and the remaining one spot will be filled either by Nepal or Namibia. If Nepal wins all their remaining four matches at TU Cricket Ground, then Nepal will qualify for the World Cup Qualifiers and will get chance to play against test teams like West Indies, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Ireland.
Papua New Guinea, United Arab Emirates and Unites States of America are relegated to the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifiers Play-off and will be joined by either Nepal or Namibia.

ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifiers is the second chance for the teams which finish at bottom four in the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2. The bottom four teams from the League Two will join the two regional champions (Canada and Jersey).
The top two teams from those six teams will qualify for the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifiers.
– What is ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifiers ?
ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifiers is the ultimate and the final step to qualify for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in India. There will be 10 teams in the qualifiers and the top 2 teams will qualify for the mega event.
Till now (March 7), four teams out of 10 are confirmed of ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifiers spots. There are:
> Netherlands and Zimbabwe (Two of the Bottom five from the ICC CWC Super League)
> Scotland and Oman (Two of the top 3 from the ICC League 2)
> Remaining Six
- Three teams from: South Africa, Sri Lanka, West Indies, Ireland (Bottom 5 of Super League)
- One From: Nepal and Namibia (Top three of League 2)
So, How can Nepal Qualify for Cricket World Cup 2023 in India?
To qualify for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, Nepal will have to qualify for the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifiers.
So, to qualify for the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifiers, Nepal must finish inside the top three of the ICC CWC League 2.
If, in case Nepal finished outside the top 3, then Nepal will have to play in the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifiers Play-off and must finish top two in that league to qualify for the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifiers.
